India's 'Path of Peace' Amid Global Conflicts: The Historic Success of the BRICS Summit

Amid global geopolitical turmoil, wars, and serious diplomatic confrontations, the 18th BRICS Summit held in New Delhi, India, has made history under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The simultaneous presence of Russian President Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed several diplomatic messages to the world. While the world appeared divided into blocs due to the West Asian crisis (the Israel–Iran war) and the Russia–Ukraine conflict, India, through its diplomatic acumen, succeeded in bringing countries with opposing ideologies together on the “New Delhi Declaration.” The summit proves that, even in an era of deep differences, India’s initiative to build a bridge of global unity is its greatest strategic and diplomatic achievement.
Consensus Amid Conflicts

The Greatest Test of Indian Diplomacy
The road to this summit was far from easy. Just a few months earlier, a joint statement could not be issued at a ministerial-level meeting because of serious differences. While Iran stood on one side of the West Asian conflict and countries such as the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia adopted different positions, India used its back-channel diplomatic contacts to bring everyone to the same table. Balanced language was crafted that strongly condemned all forms of terrorism while respecting regional sovereignty. This helped set aside mutual tensions and led to the unanimous adoption of the New Delhi Declaration.

A Practical Approach to Financial Self-Reliance and “De-Dollarization”

At a time when countries are facing the impact of global sanctions, India’s initiative on trade security has been highly practical. Under India’s leadership, BRICS countries endorsed expanding trade in local currencies to protect their economies from the shocks of sanctions, without directly challenging the supremacy of the US dollar. This has provided the Global South (developing countries) with a financial shield, enabling them to operate secure trade cycles without excessive dependence on Western financial systems.

Financial Cooperation and Infrastructure Development

The summit further strengthened the role of the New Development Bank (NDB). Concrete steps were taken, particularly toward putting the bank’s financial lending for green and renewable energy projects into practice. India’s efforts have transformed BRICS from merely an ideological platform into a concrete economic engine for building infrastructure in developing countries.
A Global Front Against Terrorism
India has long suffered from cross-border terrorism. At this summit, India adopted an extremely firm position on the issue of terrorism. It was a success of Indian diplomacy that all member countries pledged in the joint declaration to strictly adhere to the standards of the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) and to work together against radicalization and cross-border terrorism.

Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) and the “Indian Model” of Sustainable Development

India presented its technological and digital revolution, including initiatives such as UPI, to the world. Member countries appreciated India’s Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI) model and agreed to implement it in other developing countries. In addition, decisions such as establishing an agricultural research platform and a railway research network connected the organization directly with the needs of ordinary people.

The Real Victory of the Policy of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam”

The 18th BRICS Summit is not merely a document of economic or diplomatic agreements; it is proof that India has the ability to weave the world’s fragmented forces into a single thread. The visit of Chinese President Xi Jinping to India and the coordination among Russia, Iran, and the Gulf countries were all made possible at Bharat Mandapam in New Delhi.
At a time when the world is passing through a divisive mindset of “you are either with us or against us,” India, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has presented a unique example of dialogue, flexibility, and coexistence. This summit declares on the global stage that India is no longer merely a country that follows global rules; it has become a “Vishwamitra”—a friend of the world—capable of reshaping global peace and policies.
